OVERVIEW

Key2Access is a tool that was co-designed with our users to help you interact with the world around you. With Key2Access you will be able to request pedestrian crossing at intersections, open doors from a distance and get more information on your surroundings, inside and outside. The Key2Access capabilities are available only at active Key2Access locations. The app will prompt you to let you know when you come into contact one of these locations and will give you a specific message detailing what is around you. However, in order to receive these prompts, you must enable location services with the app. Please go through all the help sections to have a full understanding of the mobile app.

HOW TO MAKE A PEDESTRIAN REQUEST

Intersections equipped with Key2Access technology act as interactive points of interests. At these intersections, you will be able to request pedestrian crossing from a button that appears on the app (or by using the alternate methods of requesting crossing discussed below). When you request to cross via the mobile app, it will be the same as If you pressed the physical button on the pole. You will be prompted as you approach an intersection that is equipped with the Key2Access technology and the intersection name as well as any relevant information inputted by the city will be read out to you provided that your phone is on loud or that you have VoiceOver activated. For example, imagine if the King street and Main Street intersection is equipped with Key2Access technology: When arriving at the intersection, your app will first read out to your location, in this case, the app would read out "King Street and Main Street" and a button for each street will appear on the screen, the first button will be for King street and the second button will be for Main street. If you would like to cross King Street, simply press the button that says "King Street". If you are a visually impaired user, please pay close attention to the audible cue that will follow you pressing the button to confirm you have the pressed the button you intended to press. For example, the app would read " King Street requested" once you have successfully pressed the button. If you have selected a visually impaired user profile, the app will also trigger the audible if the intersection is equipped with speakers. In settings, you can also select alternate methods of making a request. You can choose to use the physical volume buttons on the side of your phone or to use voice activation. Please exert the same level of caution while crossing the street as you would without use of the application and always use the audible signals coming from the traffic infrastructure as well as orientation and mobility training to guide your crossing.

GETTING INFORMATION ABOUT AN INDOOR SPACE

If you are in an indoor space equipped with Key2Access beacons, you will be notified about points of interest as you approach them. When you are at a point of interest, you can click the “down” volume button on the side of your phone or the “more information” button on the screen to get any more information about that point of interest, if there is any.

OPENING DOORS

If you are approaching a Key2Access retrofitted door, a button that says "open door" will appear on the screen of your phone. You must simply press this button and the door will open.

APP LAYOUT

The app is organized into 4 different main pages: the Home page, the Compass page, the Help page and Settings. The Home page is the main app screen and the one you will likely be using most frequently. If you want to return to the Home Screen at any time, simply shake your phone. The Compass screen will let you know what cardinal point you are pointing your phone in. If you are using Key2Access indoors, it is important to go to the Compass page and click “Calibrate” and follow the steps read out to you and calibrate your phone regularly. The Help page is the present page. You can return here any time to access this help section again. The Settings page is where you will go to change your user type, to change your city and to further customize your app settings. If you would like to select an alternate method of requesting pedestrian crossing, you can do so by clicking “detailed settings” on the Settings page.
